I have run into that argument before. Sebastian Flyte offers it in Brideshead Revisited. Some think he got the argument from Aloysius, but I think Aloysius is too much of a cynic for that to be true. Unless his cynicism is a mere pose. Maybe Sebastian got him drunk and Aloysius told him what he really believed.
